The Mandić family shows hospitality to all visitors of Blidinje who come and stay in their camp site. This family keeps more than 40 years old secret which has become known all over the world as the magical medicinal preparation “Boroviti” thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of the youngest generation. Based on Grandma Ljuba Mandić’s recipe this honey based preparation helps in treating respiratory illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis. It is made from the seed and pollen pine cones collected during the short ten day period when the intensity of medicinal components in this precious tree is the strongest. The kind hosts have time for everyone who wants to hear more about this product and they will take you to the places in Blidinje where they collect precious pine for this traditional, natural medicine.

Folk Medicine in the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, in every family there was a person or more of them who took care of simple health problems. Bigger communities also had medical practitioners who treated specific and more complicated difficulties. There were midwives, dentists, herbalists and practitioners specialised for treating fractures. Folk remedies and natural healing prevailed during the first part of the Middle Ages, especially in the rural areas. As the influence of Church grew during the medieval period such medical practices came into conflict with Christian views and were actively forbidden. Christianity effectively dominated what direction the medical world took and under its influence the first hospitals and universities were established.
