Motel Hajdučke vrleti

Accommodation; traditional cuisine; Herceg’s dinner

When in Blidinje, a visit to “Hajdučke Vrleti” is a must. It is a family owned motel run by a young and ambitious lady, Marija Vukoja. She inherited the family business and love for this beautiful mountain village from her father whose pictures can be seen on the walls of the motel and restaurant which is nicely embedded in the environment and furnished and decorated in the style of a medieval inn. In the restaurant you can have Herceg’s dinner of polenta, fritters and cured meat and try other food eaten in this area for centuries. Veritable gastronomic delights, fresh air and mountain breeze are a good start for discovering medieval Blidinje.

Gastronomy in the Middle Ages

Many dishes from this period were not only spicy, particularly spiced with vinegar and various spices, but they were also coloured with strong yellow saffron or less attractive red. Therefore the role of very expensive but necessary spices in the Middle Ages should be pointed out. The Crusades contributed to spreading of different spices as well as various sorts of fruit. It is interesting that sugar was not so popular. The price of sugar often varied and its annual use was slightly higher than the annual use of pepper.
