Wine in the Middle Ages
Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes, generally Vitis vinifera, but it can also be made from other fruit or rice. It is one of the oldest agricultural products. Wine has been produced for thousands of years and it has long played an important role in human culture in general. Probably the oldest traces of wine growing and olive growing in Herzegovina have been recorded at the Late Antiquity archaeological site of Mogorjelo near Čapljina which was once an estate belonging to a rich Roman citizen. Up to the arrival of the Ottomans into this region the wine growing in Herzegovina had definitely seen a boom which is evidented in some Ottoman records from the 16th century mentioning 800 dunams (acres) of vineyards just in the vicinity of Ljubuški.
