Wine in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, wine was a common drink usually consumed with meals every day. In some historical records wine is also mentioned as the best cure for the hardships of daily life. It is also one of the oldest agricultural products in the world. Fourteenth and fifteenth century were the most fruitful period of winegrowing and wine making in Herzegovina or its “golden age” when the region was under the rule of the Kotromanović dynasty. Almost every aristocratic family had their own vineyard or more of them which depended on the status and power of the family. Several grape varieties of the region were traditionally mixed in a specific ratio in order to make premium quality wines of Žilavka and Blatina. The wine from our region was first mentioned as a special gift of King Tvrtko.
