Restaurant and Lodge Most

Medieval menu; accommodation; activity holidays

From 1935 to 1958 the Zelić family owned a small shop and a wheel-wright’s workshop just where today’s restaurant Most is. In 1958 they opened an inn. After more than 50 years of patient work in catering, today they manage a modern tourist facility with a national restaurant and coffee bar, a beautiful terrace and well equipped modern rooms. The centre also includes Old Stories tavern that reminds us of the times passed.

Gastronomy in the Middle Ages

Most people in medieval Herzegovina lived a very simple life and they had to make their own food. Their everyday diet was based on bread, usually a dark, heavy bread made from barley flour or a mixture of rye and wheat flour. After a poor harvest, when grain was in short supply, people were forced to include beans in their bread. The best daily portion of food consisted of approximately 20 dkg of dark bread, little meat, cheese, milk and butter, vegetables and some weak ale. On the other hand, nobles ate rich and fancy food prepared by the servants. Historical records give evidence of food rich in carbohydrates and proteins such as fish fillets, rice, porridge with wild herbs and hawberry, roasted chicken, roasted rooster stuffed with chestnut filling, as well as some desserts such as pear pudding.
