Franka Šunjić & Dream Team Babe

Franka Šunjić & Dream Team Babe

Presentation; demonstration; folk costume making

All age-related superstitions lose their meaning when you meet Franka, a vigorous old lady who will charm you with her brightness, diligence and creativity. She is one of the few women still devoted to the tradition of folk costume making thus nourishing the ethnographic tradition of the region. Herzegovina is known as the region from where people emigrate for economic reasons. The emigrants are Franka’s most faithful customers for they stick to their roots and want to celebrate all important festivals in their traditional national costume.

But there is more. The most interesting thing about granny Franka is her singing talent. Together with a few of her female neighbours she formed a singing band “Dream Team Babe” and it has made her popular all over Herzegovina. You can see her performing at traditional and trade fairs and other festivals. If you wish, you can easily persuade “Babe” to sing for you, too.

Music in the Middle Ages

During the medieval time music was very important and it developed significantly following social and religious developments that took place during the Middle Ages. Sacred music was the most prevalent and used for the purposes of religious ceremonies. Secular music was also present in many courts and some rulers gave it a very special place. Popular music flourished with the appearance of troubadours and it combined with poetry. Interest for folk music existing outside the church or court also largely grew.
