Craftsmen in the Middle Ages

Crafts in the Middle Ages had a different connotation than crafts today. Largely, Middle Ages crafts were not hobbies or artistic demonstrations, but trades that had been studied and mastered by craftsmen. Craftsmen joined forces and organized in craft guilds that allowed them the opportunity to gain prestige, power, and wealth through the practice of their trades.Over time, guilds developed to represent every possible trade in town. Tanners and leather-workers were the most numerous crafts guild. Medieval leather-workers mainly produced outer garments and shoes but also various other utility items such as leather bags, covers, saddlebags, etc. Appart from the tanners and leather-workers, craftsmen working with metal played a very important role in everyday medieval life. They made items such as locks, keys, latches and hinges but they were also specialized for cold steal and armours. Goldsmiths and wood-carvers of that time earned the most by making golden items for religious purposes or wooden objects such as furniture, icons, sculptures, etc.
