Local Animal Species and Their Role in Medieval Life
In the Middle Ages, livestock breeding was the most developed economic activity in the whole karst region of the Adriatic hinterland. Domination of karst rocky ground determined breeding of mostly small stock such as sheep and goats while in the mountain fields and highland plateaus of Herzegovina significant number of horses and cattle were bred. The most important trading livestock products were beef cattle, cured meat, tanned leather, wool, horses, mules, donkeys, etc. These products were exported to coastal towns and even to Italy and “Vlaški” cheese was highly esteemed.
