MONTENEGRO

INTRODUCTION ABOUT MONTENEGRO

Montenegro invites you to discover its unique combination of opposites - natural beauties, history, national, ethnological and cultural diversities.

In the past, in the ancient 15th century, the western part of today's Montenegro was part of the Duchy of Old Herzegovina, ruled by Herzeg Stjepan Vukčić Kosača. This mighty ruler, originating from today's Herzegovina, expanded his Duchy by conquering territories of the Balšić Dynasty, which was present in today’s Montenegro, and from which came his first wife, Jelena. In the following years, he expanded his Duchy with territories of Zeta, which belonged to the Crnojević Dynasty and moved the borders of Old Herzegovina all the way to the town of Bar in the south and the town Pljevlja in the north of today's Montenegro. From material remains from that period, some of its fortifications have been partially preserved, and the necropolises of tombstones (stećci), listed in the UNESCO Heritage List, are worth your attention.

In order to introduce to you and revive this period of history, whose traditional patterns and customs are to be found even today, we suggest that you follow - by car, walking or by bicycle, one or all of the four thematic units: "Olive and maritime tradition of Luštica", “Domestic products of the coastal hinterland", "Stećci - mute monuments of the past" and "Old caravan routes".

By discovering these four thematic trails, you will also discover friendly hosts in Montenegro, who will welcome you traditionally, spontaneously and openly into their homes and will happily tell you some of the many legends preserved through oral tradition or host you with domestic dishes made by old recipes.
